Our school is registered with the Eco-Schools programme which provides us with a simple framework to integrate environmental education and improvements into the running of the whole school.

Eco-Schools works by involving democratically elected groups of students, staff and parents. The scheme encourages teamwork to create a shared understanding of how a school can be run to decrease its impact on the environment.

We successfully achieved the Platinum Eco Flag Award — a Welsh Government scheme managed by Keep Wales Tidy. The Platinum Flag Award is an excellence award recognising the teaching and learning required to reduce, reuse and recycle. To achieve the award, staff and pupils developed a whole school approach with each class focussed on a different ecological theme.

Gilwern School has an active School Council, which is represented by two pupils from each year group. Meetings are held each half term and give pupils the opportunity to discuss issues of importance to them. The School Council plays an important role in many of the decisions affecting daily school life. Views of all children are sought to ensure the School Council is inclusive.

This is our school council anti-bullying policy.

Through the introduction of Values Based Education the school council lead meetings to discuss what values inspire children, young people and adults to adopt and live positive human values. The focus of Values Based Education is to develop ethical and emotional intelligence, deepen relationships and social cohesion and embed a strong values-based culture to give students the best chance of academic success.

As a result, the school council have chosen ten values to explore each month throughout the academic year, one of which is celebrated at the end of each month. The Head Boy and Girl lead the whole school assembly encouraging representatives from each class to share what they have found out.
