Meet Our Staff

Mr Guy

  • Name: Roger Guy
  • Job Title: Headteacher
  • Experience: I completed a BSc(Hons) Psychology and PGCE at Swansea University. My early teaching experiences were in Brynglas, Woodlands and Trellech. I was appointed Deputy Headteacher in Gilwern in 1993 and became Head in 2000. I am now fortunate to have been able to build a fantastic team to take the school forward. The pupils of Gilwern always come first in all aspects of my professional life. In addition to school I have been Chair of the Abergavenny Headteachers group for a number of years and represent Monmouthshire on the Welsh International Dimension in Education group and WAG Leadership Development and Implementation Group.

Mrs Marles

  • Name: Sue Marles
  • Job Title: Deputy Head Teacher
  • Experience: Since graduating in 2003 I worked at Cross Ash Primary School gaining class teaching responsibility across the primary phase. I am now embracing a new challenge of Deputy Headship.
  • Class/Year Group: Year 5
  • Class/Group Ethos: I aim to create a stimulating learning environment where children come in happily in the morning and go home, bursting with stories of the day's activities!
  • Fun Bits: Fy hoff fwyd yw siocled. Dw i'n hoffi nofi. I am also a keen netball player and love going to Zumba. My superpower would be to have super human speed.

Mrs Millington

  • Name: Melanie Millington
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in 2011 and enjoyed getting to know children throughout the school. I have been a teacher for a long time and worked in lots of schools. I am loving the new challenge of teaching in the Foundation Phase and helping coordinate the Eco Explorers.

  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: Learning from and looking after each other.
  • FUN BITS: Rwy'n hoffi mynd nofio gyda fy mab. I love to read and if I had any spare time I would make things with my sewing machine. My superpower would be to be in two places at the same time.

Mrs Edwards

  • Name: Brady Edwards
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher (Foundation Phase Leader)
  • EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in December 2007. I am co-ordinator of Curriculum Development, skills, planning (foundation phase) and have recently taken over as co-ordinator of Numeracy. International School Partnership leader.

  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: A zest for learning through a variety of exciting ways
  • FUN BITS: Fy hoff fwyd yw selsig a thatws stwnsh. My favourite sport is curling! My superpower would be to stop time.

Mrs Conway

  • Name: Melissa Conway
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: I started in Gilwern School in September 2007.
  • CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Reception
  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I aim to create a happy creative teaching environment where all are valued. I take a positive and enthusiastic approach to teaching to suit the needs of the individual pupils in my care.

Mr Marsh

  • NAME: Laurie Marsh
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: I graduated from Bangor University in 2015. I taught for a year at Brynmawr St Marys RC school. I am over the moon to join such a thrilling, welcoming team here at Gilwern.
  • CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 3
  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I wish to create an open, positive, supportive relationship where children feel that they are listened to.
  • FUN BITS: Dw i'n hoffi chwarae pel droed ac rwy'n mwyhau pysgota. I would love to own a magic wand to mark all my books.

Miss Lloyd

  • NAME: Joanna Lloyd
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: I started working at Gilwern School in September 2014, having previously taught in Monmouthshire and Powys County Schools since graduating. I have found Gilwern School a very happy, friendly and welcoming team to join.
  • CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 4
  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: One of may favourite quotes is 'The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another'. (Marva Collins).
  • FUN BITS: When I'm not in school, I'm running around after the animals on the farm with the sheepdog. I also enjoy fiddling in the garden, trying to make the vegetables grow that bit faster! My favourite meal would have to be a roast dinner, with all the vegetables freshly picked from my garden. Fy hoff fwyd yw siocled. My superpower would be to fly in the sky looking down at all the hustle and bustle below.

Mrs Parry

  • NAME: Anna Parry
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: ICT Co-ordinator, History Co-ordinator and School Council.
  • CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Year 5
  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I endeavour to provide a friendly and welcoming classroom environment where children are inspired. I encourage the children to gain a sense of achievement and an ability to work independently. A range of opportunities and a wide variety of experiences make Year 2 a fun place to be. My expertise is in Science and I promote learning of skills in this area.
  • FUN BITS: Rwy'n mwynhau gwylio rygbi - Cymru a Pontypool. My favourite food is curry.I also enjoy watching live ballet. I like reading and am a big fan of Harry Potter. Superpower - I would like to be able to fly.

Mrs Welford

  • NAME: Beth Welford
  • JOB TITLE: Class Teacher
  • EXPERIENCE: As well as being a Primary School Teacher, I have experienced a number of different roles. I have worked in Information Services at Coleg Gwent and owned a business running preschool music classes called Music Bugs.
  • CLASS/YEAR GROUP: Reception
  • CLASS/GROUP ETHOS: I am passionate about learning and hope that this encourages the children in my class to be stimulated to learn and grow together.
  • FUN BITS: I have 2 daughters and during my spare time I am a Brownie Guider. Dw i'n mwynhau mynd ar wyliau. My Superpower would be to be in 2 places at once!
